Passing the PTCB PTCE — the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam — requires more than reading through a stack of drug references. The 30-Day Structure

  • Week 1 (Days 1–7): Sig Codes, Terminology & Top 200 — Part 1 — Days 1–3 build your sig code and terminology foundation; Days 4–7 start the top 200 drugs by class (cardiovascular, endocrine, anti-infectives, GI, and respiratory).
  • Week 2 (Days 8–14): Top 200 — Part 2 & Calculations — Finish the top 200 drug classes, then master pharmacy calculations: conversions, days supply, dosing by weight, alligation, and flow rates.
  • Week 3 (Days 15–21): Patient Safety, Interactions & Dosing — LASA drugs, high-alert medications, error prevention, CYP450 interactions, and dosing scenarios — then start order entry.
  • Week 4 (Days 22–28): Order Entry, Federal Requirements & Controlled Substances — DEA number verification, prescription processing, FDA requirements, DEA schedules I–V, and inventory management.
  • Week 5 (Days 29–30): Final Review & Mock Exam — Target your remaining weak domains on Day 29, then take a full timed 90-question mock exam on Day 30.

Week 1: Sig Codes, Terminology & Top 200 Drugs — Part 1

Days 1–3 build your sig code and pharmacy terminology foundation. Days 4–7 start the top 200 drugs by therapeutic class — the highest-yield memorization on the exam.

Sig Codes — Frequency & Timing

  • Learn the core frequency codes: BID (twice daily), TID (three times daily), QID (four times daily), PRN (as needed), AC (before meals), PC (after meals), and QHS (at bedtime).
  • Practice translating sig codes into plain-English directions for 20 sample prescriptions.
  • Build a flashcard deck of the 25 most common sig codes and drill it twice today.

Sig Codes — Routes, Forms & Measurements

  • Learn route codes: PO (by mouth), SL (sublingual), PR (rectal), topical, otic, ophthalmic, and respiratory (for example, nebulizer or nasal spray).
  • Memorize dosage form abbreviations (tab, cap, ER, SR, susp, sol) and measurement abbreviations (mL, mg, mcg, g, tsp, tbsp, gtt).
  • Take a 25-question sig code and abbreviation quiz; review every miss.

Pharmacy Terminology & Safe Abbreviations

  • Study generic vs. brand names and how prescriptions reference both.
  • Know the abbreviations that must never be used — U, IU, QD, QOD, MS, MSO4, trailing zeros, and missing leading zeros — per the ISMP list.
  • Complete 30 terminology questions covering look-alike terms and common confusions.

Top 200 — Cardiovascular & Anticoagulants

  • Learn the top cardiovascular agents: lisinopril, atorvastatin, amlodipine, metoprolol, furosemide, and warfarin.
  • Study indications, common strengths, and key counseling points — for example, warfarin monitoring and vitamin K interactions.
  • Add clopidogrel and any missed agents to your top 200 flashcards; take a 15-question class quiz.

Top 200 — Endocrine & Diabetes

  • Master metformin, levothyroxine, glipizide, and common insulin products.
  • Review counseling for diabetes agents: timing of doses, hypoglycemia signs, and storage of insulin.
  • Take a 15-question endocrine and diabetes quiz.

Top 200 — Anti-Infectives

  • Study amoxicillin, azithromycin, cephalexin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim.

  • Master omeprazole, pantoprazole, ondansetron, albuterol, fluticasone, montelukast, and prednisone.
  • Review respiratory-device counseling (spacers, nebulizers) and PPI administration (before meals, short-term use).
  • Take a 30-question mixed quiz on Days 1–7 content; log every miss.

Week 2: Top 200 Drugs — Part 2 & Pharmacy Calculations

Finish the top 200 drug classes on Day 8, then spend Days 9–12 building calculation fluency — conversions, days supply, dosing, and compounding math — and open the Patient Safety domain on Days 13–14.

  • Learn gabapentin, sertraline, fluoxetine, alprazolam, zolpidem, tramadol, and hydrocodone/acetaminophen.
  • Note the controlled substance schedule for each opioid, benzodiazepine, and stimulant you study.
  • Run a cumulative top 200 drill: 30 rapid-fire brand/generic/class questions.

Calculations — Units & Conversions

  • Drill metric conversions: mg to mcg, g to mg, L to mL, and kg to lb.
  • Learn household equivalents: 1 tsp = 5 mL, 1 tbsp = 15 mL, 1 oz = 30 mL.
  • Practice Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion and complete 20 conversion problems.

Calculations — Days Supply & Quantity

  • Learn to compute quantity to dispense and days supply from the sig (for example, BID for 30 days = 60 units).
  • Practice ratio and proportion setups for dose problems.
  • Complete 20 days-supply and quantity problems; aim for 100% accuracy.

  • Practice mg/kg dosing using patient weight in kilograms.
  • Convert ordered doses into measurable volumes (for example, 250 mg from a 125 mg/5 mL suspension).

  • Memorize the ISMP high-alert categories: insulin, heparin and other anticoagulants, opioids, chemotherapy, and concentrated electrolytes such as potassium chloride.

Week 3: Patient Safety, Interactions & Dosing

Days 15–16 finish the Patient Safety and Quality Assurance domain with error prevention, reporting, and warnings. Days 17–20 cover drug interactions and dosing. Day 21 starts Order Entry and Prescription Processing.

  • Study where errors happen: prescribing, transcription, order entry, dispensing, and administration.
  • Learn prevention strategies: independent double checks, bar-code scanning, and avoiding error-prone abbreviations.
  • Review how errors are reported to ISMP and the pharmacist role when an error is caught before reaching a patient.

Patient Safety Review & Black Box Warnings

  • Re-drill LASA pairs and high-alert medications from Days 13–14.
  • Study black box warnings for common drugs and FDA MedWatch reporting.
  • Take a 40-question patient safety and quality assurance quiz; aim for 80% or better.

  • Learn the DEA number format: two letters followed by seven digits.
  • Practice the verification checksum: add the first, third, and fifth digits, then add twice the second, fourth, and sixth digits, and check the last digit of the total.

Is the 30-day PTCE study plan really enough to pass?
The 30-day plan is a structured sprint built for candidates who already have some pharmacy exposure — from a training program, an internship, or on-the-job experience. Days 13–24 mix safety, interactions, and order entry scenarios, and Days 25–30 concentrate on federal rules, controlled substances, inventory, and the final mock exam. What is the PTCB PTCE exam format?
The PTCB PTCE is a computer-based exam delivered at Pearson VUE test centers. It contains 90 multiple-choice questions — 80 scored and 10 unscored pilot items — and you get 110 minutes. Scaled scores range from 1000 to 1600, and the passing standard is 1400. Questions follow four weighted domains on the current blueprint: Medications (35%), Patient Safety and Quality Assurance (23.75%), Order Entry and Processing (22.5%), and Federal Requirements (18.75%).
